It exacts around 8 hours before Mercury turns retrograde, which propels us into a new overview position; reviewing, reevaluating, reprioritising and revisiting our journey over the last few months or year with new perspective and wisdom.
The power of Sagittarius season and Mercury being in Capricorn allows us to access big picture vision, organise our thoughts and ideas, and then lay the foundations and structure to build on them with some actionable steps.
This is a powerful time of year to reflect and reimagine. Create a balance of space for doing so, as well as enjoying each moment and connecting with loved ones. And rather than starting something new this is a great time for tying up loose ends so there is fresh space for a whole new level of adventure.
The Sagittarius new moon enthusiatically reminds us of where we need to bring in more optimism that might not have been available to us in the past. Looking at something with a different lens can be incredibly healing, and pairing with Mercury retrograde the heavens are calling us to do so. With Mars closely on this lunation's tail, be aware of aggression and anger guiding our decisions and interactions. Take space and zoom out for better results.
Use your inner wisdom, vision, imagination and invest thoughtfulness to take aim for new direction, this is the gift of the Centaur.
New Moon in Sagittarius at 20° 40’
Actively thinking about “hope” in December is one of my favorite Astrological traditions. When the Sun enters optimistic, faithful, and possibility-seeking Sagittarius we contemplate “hope” at the end of the year. Though not the end of the Astrological year, December inspires me to remember that while it’s the eleventh hour it’s not exactly midnight yet. Hopefully, in this eleventh hour we’re sharing together, supported by Sagittarius, and especially in the current complexities, we can put our best ideas forward to help us find more understanding.
But first, let’s acknowledge that “hope” has made a fool out of so many of us. It can feel safer to think of hope as anti-intellectual. So instead we wrap ourselves in protective armor; living in the wreckage of the future so we can see danger coming and hope won’t make a fool out of us, again. After surviving and perhaps currently enduring one collective trauma, one moral injury after the next, can you blame us? Of course not. To set the stage for saying hello to hope again, I want to first share that Jane Goodall frames hope as a survival skill. A survival skill that enables us to cope in the face of adversity.
For the purpose of this horoscope, I want to build on hope from the ideas of philosopher Maimonides when he said, “Hope is the belief in the plausibility of the possible…as opposed to the necessity of the probable.” With Mars in Sagittarius, the plausibility of the possible is critically important. I think we can often struggle with the plausibility of the possible when we’re surrounded by popular cynicism, criticism, and contempt. The plausibility of the possible isn’t popular.
Psychologist Julia Samuel argues, “Hope is a feeling, but it’s also a plan.” The day after the New Moon in Sagittarius, Mercury turns retrograde in Capricorn. With this in mind, we’re asked to consider - if solutions are our approach, what’s the strategy to identify and implement them? Jupiter, currently finishing its retrograde, will trine Mercury which will further this question – what’s the plan for hope? What I found fascinating about the semantics of hope is that currently it's considered a want or wish. Which makes sense. The ancients believed hope was closely linked to truth and that hope has an aspect of faith too. Venus in trust-seeking Scorpio, opposite Jupiter in faithful Taurus, at the time of this New Moon is truly the most supportive transit to help us plan out trust and faith while feeling and planning hope.
When it comes to hope, we need to remember that our spiritual practice helps us develop faith AND trust. If you’re feeling hopeless – which is normal – I gently encourage you to return to your spiritual practice and/or begin initiating one with the questions to the Universe that A Course in Miracles asks us to ask, “Where would you have me go? What would you have me do? What would you have me say? And to whom?” From there, you begin accessing a plan that comes from a higher intelligence which will guide you to the situations and relationships where you can be most useful and healing. May the New Moon in Sagittarius inspire you to say hello to hope to once more.

You’re being guided to new ideas through education and exploration that will help you see not just your identity differently; but your problems, relationships, and vision for the future too.
Intimacy, Empathy, Sexuality & Transformation
Normalize (and celebrate?) discomfort, Taurus. The New Moon in Sagittarius reminds you that all of what you’re seeking; intimacy, truth, and change can only be achieved through the staying “all in” - especially when it’s uncomfortable. More than likely, only WHEN it’s uncomfortable. Don’t tap out. You can do it! Stay engaged, stay transparent, stay protected, AND connected.
Romance, Boundaries, Partnerships & Trust
Let love in, Gemini! You know better than most as the sign of the twins that only the best of things come in pairs. The New Moon in Sagittarius wants you to get clear and willing on not just receiving the love you dream of but in thinking about the kind of love you want to give too. Knowing that balance is your winning strategy in preparing you for the romance you deserve!
Habits, Systems, Wellbeing & Routine
Small goals only, Cancer. The New Moon in Sagittarius helps you achieve major progress by going slowly and through small goals only. It seems counterintuitive but it isn’t. You’re learning how to crawl slowly before you can sprint fast. Think about following author James Clear’s advice and improving your life by 1% daily over time. You’ll be unstoppable in no time!
Self-Disclosure, Charisma, Creativity & Lovability
Express yourself, Leo! The New Moon in Sagittarius inspires you to do what you do best and share substantial information about yourself with people who need to know it. It’ll be a bit scary, perhaps messy – but you’ll become a braver version of yourself as you express what’s on your heart. A magnificent self-revelation will occur when you engage in powerful self-disclosure.
Vulnerability, Home, Family & Emotional Agility
What is “Home” to you, Virgo? It’s what we’re all hardwired for, but how many of us experience and know what it is? The New Moon in Sagittarius helps you understand home as an experience, a context, a feeling you can generate through accurate self-acceptance. That way, home becomes something you take with you wherever you are rather than something outside of you.
Curiosity, Observation, Dialogue & Active Listening
Straight talk leads to straight understanding, Libra. The central point of the New Moon in Sagittarius is the archer’s arrow, right? So you’re invited to speak more clearly and directly with compassion and clarity. Clear is kind, unkind can be cruel if you’re not careful. So remember that empathetic assertion and straight talk are the path to your success on this New Moon.
Finances, Security, Clarity of Values & Pleasure
Ground down, Scorpio. Few Astrologers would debate that Scorpio has had one of the most transformative two years, more than the other signs. And so you need to take a beat and reflect on where you’re at, how you got here, and where you want to go next. The New Moon in Sagittarius is the perfect moment to acknowledge the awareness you’ve acquired over the last 2 years and how you’d like to implement those learnings.
Identity, Desire, Autonomy, & Freedom
Happy Birthday, Sagittarius! Think of all your birthday wishes, dreams, hopes, and wants. Tell the Universe under the annual New Moon in Sagittarius because this is your moment to manifest. Consider, “Who do I want to become, to do what I want to do, to have what I want to have?” It’s all about being first, then doing, to have whatever you want to have.
Completion, Surrender, Healing & Spiritual Support
It’s not resignation, it's a retreat Capricorn. The New Moon in Sagittarius is your opportunity to take a step back and rest, rethink, and reimagine with the time and space you can give yourself. Consider learning about your spiritual practice to help guide you to the experiences that support you in healing and even closure from disempowering holding patterns.
Friendship, Activism, Collaborations & Shared Humanity
Power to your people, Aquarius. The New Moon in Sagittarius cultivates your leadership among friends, social systems, organization, and your “community”. You’re being asked to hold a vision that helps you generate new pathways and plans that join others in shared values and missions to make the world a more equitable, accountable, loving, and peaceful place.
